First Update from Switzerland

So I've been in Switzerland since Wednesday night and this is the first time I've been able to get online. There just hasn't been much access available in the places I've been so far.

Boarding my flight to Madrid from Chicago on Wednesday afternoon, I discovered that I was seated in the very last row in a middle seat conveniently located next to the restroom. The woman seated next to me was angry about not having a window seat and was very passive-aggressive towards the flight crew. So this made for a very long 8 hour flight. We arrived in Madrid a bit late with about an hour before my connection to Frankfurt was supposed to leave. I met someone else who happened to be coming from Madison who was also making the same connection. After going through passport control, we got to the boarding gate at 8:50 for a 9:05am departure. However, the plane had already left the gate and was no where to be seen! The gate staff tried to see if they could put us on a bus out to the plane, but that was not possible. So we had to wait until 11:35 for the next flight and fly standby which ended up working out fine.

I had intended to stop in Heidelberg, Germany for a couple of hours, but because of the flight delay this wasn't possible. So I continued on to Basel, Switzerland for the night. I spent time walking the streets -- they have a market with a very red town hall. I also went to the impressive art museum which had a very interesting temporary exhibit on media photography and art featuring the work of Warhol and others.

Then I left for Luzern where I write this from. On Friday night, I went out to a neighboring town to try to locate some family history, but was unsuccessful. On Saturday morning, I went to the Swiss Museum of Transportation which was recommended in my travel guide, but I didn't find so exciting. I will be leaving for Interlaken later in the afternoon, but not before walking a bit more around town.

I'm still jetlagged, my Internet time is limited, and I'm not used to this German keyboard, so I will try to write more later.

"Happy" travels...

Brian -- Glad to hear you made it safely, if somewhat delayed and tested by some of your fellow travelers. I remember a flight from Chicago to Heathrow on my way to southern Africa (with a 9 hour layover in London and a 12 hour flight to Jo'burg to come) where I was in a middle seat, in the middle row, right under one of the televisions -- so the light was on me all night but I couldn't actually see the screen. Luckily, I was well away from any toilets, though had no room on either armrest due to rather bulky neighbors.

Good times; good times!!

Interlaken's beautiful -- so enjoy. In our grief everyone but Achala is abandoning the office next week. You made your mark -- now make it on the Swiss!

Mark (aka Mr. Go Global!).

I was surprised to see you mention the museum in Basil. I saw the very same one while I was in that city in June. Did you see the video of CNN clips on the third floor? I spent ten minutes being mesmerized by that. Did you see the fountain in Basil with all the weird black mechanical water-shooter things?

Also, I had trouble with the German keyboards too. Why are the letters switched around?!

Keep up the webjournaling. Mom and Dad and I enjoy reading it.
